Hertfordshire Children's Centres get ready to celebrate!

You’ll discover more than you think at a Sure Start Children’s Centre – and now’s your chance to find out what’s on offer in Hertfordshire.

National Sure Start Children’s Centres Week starts on Monday September 14, and centres throughout Hertfordshire are celebrating by holding open days and special events to show off what they do in their local community.

At the same time  Hertfordshire County Council is launching a DVD to highlight the work of children’s centres and extended schools which is being distributed to people involved in these services throughout the county.

Children’s centres give practical advice on parenting, support and help in finding childcare, access to family health services and links to job opportunities. They listen to the views of parents in each community and can offer anything from healthy eating, drop-in sessions for young families and even baby massage.

Hertfordshire has 53 designated Sure Start Children’s Centres and a further 29 are in the process of being established to bring the county up to its target of 82 centres by 2010.

“Children’s centres are so special because they offer a support network for families in informal child-friendly settings in their local area,” said Jane Pitman, Lead Member for Children’s Services. “What’s more, they are great places for children to have fun.

“Hertfordshire is close to its goal of setting up a children’s centre in every community in the county - and that gives us an even better reason to celebrate this special week.”
